Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data the can-i-trust extension and this website handle, how we use it, and what we don't do with it. Our principle is simple: collect the bare minimum needed for the service to work.

1. Single purpose

can-i-trust has a single purpose: to assess how trustworthy the online store you're visiting is. When you ask it to, it reads the visible content of the active tab and returns a trust score from 0 to 100 with criteria, a summary and red flags. It does nothing else.

2. What the extension analyzes

can-i-trust evaluates only the visible content of the tab you choose to analyze, and only when you press “Analyze”. We turn that content into text in your browser and send it to our proxy so an AI model can score it.

• We don't read other tabs or your browsing history.
• We don't access forms, passwords or data you type on the page.
• We don't integrate marketplace APIs or scrape private endpoints.
• Nothing runs in the background: analysis happens only after your explicit action.

3. What data we handle

These are the only categories of data the extension processes:

• Website content: the visible text of the page you choose to analyze. It is sent to our proxy solely to generate the score and is not retained after we respond.
• Anonymous identifier: a random UUID generated in your browser (see §4).
• Local preferences: extension settings stored in your browser.

We do not collect your name, email, address, payment details, location, contacts, or your browsing history.

4. Anonymous identifier

Each installation generates a random identifier (UUID) stored locally in your browser. It is sent to the proxy to apply fair usage limits per installation. This identifier is not linked to your identity or to personal data.

5. Third-party processing (AI)

The visible page text is sent, through our proxy, to a language-model provider for the sole purpose of generating the score. We do not deliberately send personally identifiable information. Avoid analyzing pages that contain your sensitive data. We do not share data with third parties for any other purpose.

6. Limited Use of data (Chrome Web Store)

can-i-trust's use of information obtained complies with the Chrome Web Store Limited Use policy. Specifically:

• We use the data only to provide the single purpose described above.
• We do not sell or rent the data to third parties.
• We don't transfer the data except as strictly necessary to provide the service (AI processing), for security, or as required by law.
• We don't use the data for personalized advertising, creditworthiness or lending purposes.
• No humans read the content, except as strictly necessary to operate or debug the service with your consent, for security, or to comply with the law.

7. Retention and deletion

Page content is processed transiently to respond and is not stored afterward. The anonymous identifier and your preferences live in the browser's local storage; you can remove them by uninstalling the extension or clearing site data.

8. Permissions the extension requests

• Active tab / scripting: to read the visible content of the tab you analyze, only when you ask.
• Storage: to save the anonymous identifier and your preferences in your browser.
• Site access: to be able to analyze any store you choose to evaluate (the extension is platform-agnostic).

9. What we don't do

• We don't build an advertising profile of you.
• We don't sell or rent data to third parties.
• We don't track you across sites or across sessions.
• We don't store page content beyond what's needed to respond.

10. Children

can-i-trust is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect improvements or legal changes. We'll post the new version here with its update date.
